Field Site — Las Vegas, Nevada

The maximum variety
comparative field site

Las Vegas is the canonical endpoint of the experiential economy — a city where exhibition value is not a design choice but the organizing logic of the entire built environment. As a research field site it is irreplaceable precisely because of this extremity: it makes visible, at full scale, what happens when the Resources, Processes, and Values of a hospitality ecosystem are configured entirely around spectacle.

The Las Vegas Ecosystem
mapped through Resources, Processes, Values

The same analytical instrument used to characterize the Vancouver Island field site applies here — the RPV framework (Christensen) maps the institutional configuration of the Las Vegas experiential ecosystem. The three layers are mutually constitutive: Vegas Values shape which Resources are recognized as assets and which Processes are legitimate; those Resources and Processes in turn reproduce the Values. This is an autopoietic system — it generates the conditions for its own continuation.

Within the Values layer, Flynn (2006) extends Benjamin's two-part dialectic — cult value and exhibition value — by adding exchange value as the mediating economic layer. In Las Vegas, exhibition value is dominant and exchange value is the most fully developed transaction infrastructure in global hospitality. The cult/exhibition/exchange analysis explains why the RPV configuration produces what it produces.

Resources
What Vegas holds
  • Global capital infrastructure — Strip financing, casino development models
  • Spectacle-grade venues — production residencies, flagship restaurants, convention halls
  • Global talent pipelines — headliners, celebrity chefs, international acts
  • UNLV and Black Fire Innovation — embedded institutional R&D
  • Convention and conference ecosystem (CES, NAB, Blueprint) as sustained demand generator
  • Tourism infrastructure at maximum scale — Harry Reid International, room inventory, loyalty networks
Processes
How Vegas operates
  • Destination event as the primary delivery format — the experience justifies the journey
  • Celebrity and brand as the legitimate quality signal
  • Convention floor logic — hospitality as B2B as much as B2C
  • The Strip residency, the flagship restaurant, the immersive production as proven formats
  • Continuous reinvention cycle — the old is demolished and replaced on a 5–7 year rhythm
  • Institutional innovation infrastructure (UNLV Incubator, Black Fire) as coordinated R&D layer
Values
What Vegas protects
  • Maximum variety as the only legitimate operating mode — novelty is the primary signal
  • Global ambition as default — not who comes from here but who comes here
  • Exhibition value dominant (Flynn / Benjamin) — hyperreality as endpoint, not failure mode
  • Reinvention as identity — preservation is not a Vegas value
  • Exchange value fully articulated — room rates, table minimums, bottle service as the transaction infrastructure
  • The deal as organizing unit — every relationship is a transaction at scale
Note on autopoiesis: the three layers are mutually constitutive, not independent columns. The Vegas Values layer determines which Resources are legible as assets — a regional lounge musician is not a Resource in this system; a Las Vegas residency headliner is. Those Resources and the Processes they enable reproduce the Values that selected them. The system is self-generating.

Two practitioners,
two lenses, one ecosystem

Michael Cole (Cultural Psychology, 1996) argues that different theoretical lenses can illuminate the same phenomenon simultaneously without requiring unification into a single theory. The coordination is the method. In the Las Vegas field site, this is not an academic construct — it describes how Vegas actually works. Two practitioners hold genuinely different lenses within the same ecosystem and coordinate through the industry connections that Las Vegas produces.

Lens 1 — RPV / Innovation Systems
Robert H. Rippee, Ph.D.
Co-founder, Black Fire Innovation · Founder, UNLV Incubator · Co-founder, Fuzebox.AI
Rippee's research frames Las Vegas as an institutional innovation system — a designed infrastructure for how organizations adapt or ossify under rapid technological change. At UNLV, through Black Fire Innovation and the Incubator he founded, he built the Processes layer of the Vegas experiential operating system: the institutional R&D infrastructure that coordinates the ecosystem's innovation capacity. His PhD in consumer behavior and technology adoption grounds the innovation framing in human behaviour as much as technology — a direct connection to the RPV diagnostic and the VFD miscategorization argument at the centre of Paper 1.

Connection to the PhD research: Rippee's institutional framing maps directly onto RPV as a coordinated analytical system — not as individual lenses but as a mutually constitutive governance architecture. He has engaged with the PhD research and its potential fit within the UNLV innovation hub context.
Lens 2 — |F|D|S|L| / Experiential Economy
Elizabeth Blau
Founder & CEO, Blau + Associates · Cornell Hotel Management · James Beard Award nominee
Elizabeth Blau is widely credited with the transformation of Las Vegas into the premier culinary destination it is today. Her firm, Blau + Associates, operates daily inside the Benjamin tension in the world's most demanding exhibition-value environment — developing the curatorial authority for knowing how far spectacle can be pushed before authenticity collapses. Her practice is the Food and Drink axes of |F|D|S|L| operating at maximum variety: a fully designed culinary experiential economy, built restaurant by restaurant, across decades.

Connection to the PhD research: Blau's work is the empirical instantiation of Lens 2 at scale — what |F|D|S|L| experience design looks like when the Values layer is exhibition-value dominant and the Resources include global celebrity chef pipelines and Strip-level capital.
The Cole instantiation: On Vancouver Island, the practitioner-researcher holds both lenses as one person — Doctor Obscurity / Professor Playlist / George Crooney operating across Lens 1 and Lens 2 simultaneously. In Las Vegas, Rippee and Blau each hold one lens and coordinate through Las Vegas industry connection. The PhD practitioner-researcher is the person who can hold both simultaneously across both field sites. That is the methodological claim.

Blueprint Las Vegas —
where the rooms meet the experiences

Blueprint Las Vegas is an annual proptech conference — the intersection of real estate development, technology, and the built environment. It is the professional community where the people who finance and construct hospitality infrastructure meet the people who design what happens inside it. This is not incidental to the Vegas field site; it is the mechanism that makes the field site professionally legible.

Location-Based Experiences are not only a hospitality and entertainment design problem — they are a real estate value problem. The built environment (hotels, casinos, mixed-use developments, convention centres) is the physical substrate of the LBE. Proptech is the sector designing, financing, and operating that substrate. Blueprint is where those two communities converge. For the PhD research on the R&D-to-market interface in experience-intensive platforms, Blueprint provides the institutional network that connects the innovation systems analysis (Lens 1) to the venue economics that make deployment possible.

Joel Flynn has maintained an ongoing professional relationship with the Blueprint proptech community across multiple years. Flynn (2022) PTML was presented at Blueprint Las Vegas, September 2022. The Rippee connection and the Carleton TIM / Dr. Tony Bailetti connection were established through Blueprint 2023. Blueprint is the conference relationship infrastructure that anchors the Vegas field site in a specific professional community — not merely the mechanism by which individual contacts were made.

Italian-American Club of Las Vegas —
a proposed |F|D|S|L| deployment at maximum variety scale

The Las Vegas field site is not only a comparative analytical frame — it is an identified location for applied |F|D|S|L| experience design research. The Italian-American Club of Las Vegas (IAC) is a heritage institution whose community identity, physical infrastructure, and cultural register align directly with a concept under development by the Multimodal Media Lab: the Gambino immersive dining experience.

Proposed Concept — Under MML Consideration
Gambino × IAC Las Vegas

The Gambino concept is a seven-sense immersive dining experience — private room, curated aromas, authentic Italian culinary programming, narrative arc with audience choice points — designed and owned by MML. The IAC Las Vegas represents an anchor venue whose heritage Italian-American identity, membership community, and Las Vegas institutional standing make it a natural fit for a permanent installation. The proposed MML previsualization work would use the IAC as the field site for a high-fidelity experiential design prototype, bringing the Gambino concept into a real venue context at scale.

Joel's role in this thread: Connector and field site researcher — bringing the IAC institutional relationship into the MML ecosystem. MML has expressed interest in the concept. The previsualization work, if developed, would be an MML project with Gambino as MML's IP. This is a proposed concept under consideration, not a confirmed engagement.

This is what the maximum variety field site makes possible analytically: a concept that operates at minimum viable scale on Vancouver Island (a lounge performance with a craft spirit pairing and coordinated lighting) can be stress-tested at maximum variety scale in Las Vegas (an immersive dining installation in a heritage institution with a permanent LED infrastructure and a national membership community). The same |F|D|S|L| framework; radically different RPV configurations; the distance between them is the research.

Vancouver Island ↔ Las Vegas —
minimum viable and maximum variety

Neither field site is superior. Both are internally coherent, autopoietically self-reproducing systems. The research question is what becomes visible about experience-intensive innovation when both are held simultaneously — when the practitioner-researcher can move between the minimum viable bounded ecosystem and the maximum variety global one, applying the same analytical instruments to radically different RPV configurations.

Vancouver Island Las Vegas
Variety profile Minimum viable — bounded, knowable, community scale Maximum — global ambition as default operating mode
Benjamin value Cult value dominant — wilderness, heritage, authenticity as the draw Exhibition value dominant — hyperreality as endpoint, not failure mode
RPV logic Self-reproducing at community scale; sustainability and continuity as Values Self-reproducing at spectacle scale; novelty and reinvention as Values
Lens 1 anchor NIC / CARTI; practitioner-researcher as embedded researcher Rippee — Black Fire Innovation / UNLV Incubator / Fuzebox.AI
Lens 2 anchor |F|D|S|L| at lounge scale; George Crooney in the room Blau — Blau + Associates; Vegas culinary experiential economy
Cole's logic Practitioner-researcher holds both lenses as one person Rippee (Lens 1) and Blau (Lens 2) coordinate through industry connection
Exchange value Community-embedded; transaction infrastructure at regional scale Most fully developed transaction infrastructure in global hospitality

Campbell River as counter-pole —
where the spectacle economy goes to escape itself

The Las Vegas / Vancouver Island research axis is not purely analytical — it has a historical dimension that makes the comparison commercially and culturally legible, particularly to Las Vegas hospitality audiences.

The mid-century entertainers who built their careers in the Las Vegas and Hollywood performance economy — Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Vincent Price, John Wayne — chose Campbell River as the place they went when they wanted to be somewhere the spectacle had not yet arrived. Campbell River was where cult value was still dominant, where the wilderness absorbed the performance economy rather than amplifying it.

This is not a tourism marketing observation. It is the historical evidence that the Vancouver Island / Las Vegas tension is real, durable, and legible to the exact audience that the Vegas field site research addresses. A Las Vegas hospitality professional who understands the gravity of that draw — why people at the peak of the exhibition value economy seek out the cult value counter-pole — understands the research problem intuitively.

The current applied research anchor on Vancouver Island is Campbell River Lodge — a venue that carries the Campbell River destination identity and allows for the kind of experiential prototyping and previsualization work that makes the |F|D|S|L| framework testable at field site scale. Campbell River as a destination name travels more easily than any single property name; the Lodge provides the operational anchor within that destination context. Painter's Lodge and other Evergreen Hospitality Group properties remain part of the broader Vancouver Island ecosystem and will be engaged when timing and institutional readiness align.

The commercial logic for Las Vegas audiences: Campbell River is where your predecessors went to remember what the experience economy is supposed to feel like before the transaction infrastructure takes over. The Gambino concept at IAC Las Vegas and the |F|D|S|L| research at Campbell River Lodge are two ends of the same inquiry.
